About Us

Paula Free, founder and CEO of Power On With Limb Loss. Paula is a below knee amputee following a motorcycle accident in 2012.png

Hi! I am Paula Free.

I’m the founder and executive director of Power On With Limb Loss.

Following an accident on a motorcycle, I chose to have my foot amputated. The fear and anxiety about losing my foot was relieved by a peer visitor who challenged me to do any and everything, that I had done before I lost my foot. As a result, I wanted to make sure that every amputee has the experience of having a peer visitor to talk to, ask questions, and be empowered by.

I have been an amputee since 2011 but it has not stopped me from being active, I live life to the fullest! I have run over 30, 5k runs. To date, my personal best is running the Eugene half marathon that i completed with excitement as I ran into the historical Hayward field - quite an accomplishment for a 64 year old amputee! I have formed teams with amputees, family, and friends for doing some of the 5k runs or relay races. The largest of which had 25 Amputees, families with kids, and friends that ran in the mud run, Dirty Dash. That is when I realized that I am just getting started!

I founded Power On With Limb Loss because I saw a huge need for local support within the Lane County area where we could really help amputees and physically challenged individuals feel inspired and have the support they need. Whether that is coming to our monthly support group meetings, doing fundraisers for newer prosthetics, or simply having someone to listen and talk with them who can fully relate.  I am a double certified peer visitor for Ampower and the Amputee Coalition, and a certified peer visitor trainer.

Before founding Power On With Limb Loss, I had been a cosmetologist for about 50 years. During my career I've owned salons and managed a beauty supply store. I am the proud mother of two children. In 1999-2003 I managed a group home for physically, medically, and developmentally challenged people. I took this job because I have a son with autism, and I needed to learn the ins and outs of the system. Now that I am an amputee this understanding has greatly impacted my ability to access new resources for myself and other amputees.

  • Ashley Engberg

Ashley Engberg is a certified peer visitor with the Amputee Coalition. Born and raised in rural Coos Bay, OR, she faced many adversities growing up as the only amputee child in the area. Not letting that stop her, she pushed forward by learning how to rollerblade, playing baseball, and even participated in track and field. After graduating, she found herself in the customer service field and account management. She first met Paula Free after attending the Discover Conference in 2022 and quickly became involved. Knowing that her strengths include compassion and empathy, she joined Paula to attend the Amputee Coalition Convention that summer to finish her peer visitor training. She is passionate about the environment, animals, and community building. In the past, she has volunteered with the Oregon based climate justice group, Rogue Climate, and donated countless hours to maintaining the local dog park in North Bend. Now she is looking to make a larger positive impact by using the skills and knowledge she has gained to join POWLL Board of Directors.

  • Robin A. Hendry, Power On With Limb Loss Board Member

    Robin A. Hendry

I worked for Aetna Inc. for 27 years, retiring in February of 2020. Throughout the years I held several positions, the latter being a writer, under the Sales and Underwriting department. During that time I also volunteered for several committees, Able body, Dress for Success, Soles4souls, fundraisers for Back to School, Adopting Families at Christmas, and Animal Rescues.

My interest has always laid in volunteerism, I believe that it is our duty to volunteer in something that interests a person. In the past the main volunteerism I have been involved in was animal welfare. Animal shelters, feral cats catch and release programs, horse rescue and have been involved in many fundraisers for all these causes. I have also been on the board for Green Coalition of San Jacinto, an environmental group dedicating our efforts to keeping our city and parks clean and free of shopping carts and graffiti. I was on the board of one of the homeless shelters, Valley Restart Shelter, working with fundraising projects. I also served on the board for the Habitat for Humanity in Hemet for several years.

When I moved to Roseburg Oregon in 2016, I volunteered for a group that focused on all around health, called UC Veg, I also got certified for Oregon State Ombudsman program, went through the Masters Gardeners class, and I am on the activities committee in the community that I live in. Other interests also lie in photography, working out at the gym, crafting, reading and being out in nature.

I am a Cum Laude graduate of Ashford University with a Bachelor of Arts in Complementary and Alternative Health. It would be a privilege to serve as a board member for Power on with Limb Loss, since I have become a member of the amputee family since 2021, I would like to help make a positive impact on other amputees. Power on with Limb Loss is an amazing organization and I would love to see it grow, I would be committed to helping it achieve its goals.

  • Marilyn Rice, Power On With Limb Loss Board Member

    Marilyn Rice

I started college at the University of Hartford, then moved to Israel and attended college. Then moved back to the states. I became a secretary for the State of Colorado Health Department, often being asked to assist the Director himself. While in Denver I met my soulmate and we got married. Driving across the country to our destination, Oregon. We arrived 3 weeks before our first child, Michele, was born and 13 months after that Jeremy was born.

For the next 24 years I was a stay-at-home mom and a full time caretaker for Jeremy. Born with a rare genetic disorder, he was very medically fragile and needed 24 hour care, and taking care of the needs of my family became my heart’s calling.

I became a below knee amputee in 2017 by way of a blood clot and yes of course I was devastated, but there was a part of me that knew I would be OK, I would survive, I would thrive. I’d like to thank you for this opportunity to share with you some things about me. I am excited to serve with you. I am committed to the success and growth of Power On With Limb Loss.
